EDITORIAL
Without a policy on quality, it is less likely that all members of a university will share a common understanding of how to ensure that their daily work contributes optimally to the quality of the institution’s outcomes and outputs. A higher education institution (HEI) would, therefore, have a substantive operational de cit. It may lack a mechanism to clearly articulate the value it attaches to quality. In particular, in the absence of a quality policy, a HEI may not have a cohesive and generally accepted understanding of its de nition of quality.
It was, therefore, a signi cant development in the life of The UWI, when the framers of The UWI Quality Policy embarked on an investigative journey to determine the most seminal components of the ethos of quality for our One UWI. The UWI Quality Policy 2017(QP) represents the context in which The UWI seeks to achieve its strategic potential as a global university.
This issue of The UWI Quality Circle signals the centrality of quality in all that we do, say, produce and provide to our several constituents. The journey to the QP began several years ago, as you will see, with a vision for an ethos that would be carried by

pioneers and foot soldiers. At the level of the QAU, where it had its genesis, were Sandra Gift and Jacqueline Moniquette. These colleagues were members of the University- wide academic quality management team, the Quality Assurance Unit, in the Board for Undergraduate Studies. Theirs was the strong sense that the quality management system at UWI needed to be articulated, better de ned and recognised, all propelled by the regional QAU.
For this edition of the QC, we are pleased to have contributions from stakeholders across all campuses on, “What The UWI Quality Policy Means To Me”. Students, administrators, academics and our Alumni opine on this theme, and present cogent and frank discourses on not only what the QP means conceptually, but also on how we can and should work towards our desired quality signposts. We thank our contributors most sincerely and wish you all an enjoyable and enlightening read.
