Adherence to High Standards
A ccording to research by the World Bank, in Latin America and the Caribbean, a student who has obtained a tertiary level degree will be paid more than twice as much as a student with only a high school education. This has tremendous importance as it relates to the development of the Latin American and Caribbean region. This is owing to the fact that the most important resource in a country is its people and a country cannot develop without a population that is
well trained.
Being well trained does not only mean having a tertiary education but it also involves having a degree that is valuable to the workforce. In this instance, the quality of the human capital is defined by the calibre of the degree offered by a university. The underlying question is to determine how The UWI assures that its outputs are of the utmost value in a constantly evolving world.
The University of the West Indies (The UWI) ensures that its outputs are of the highest value by the creation of a quality policy. By articulating its Quality Policy, The UWI guarantees the achievement of its Mission. This is guaranteed by evaluating teaching,
learning, research and outreach, in addition to all administrative and service practices and activities as defined in The UWI Quality
Policy. The UWI Quality Assurance Unit, for example, works to ensure that students are getting the best quality education. We live in a world that is constantly changing. The qualities that an employer would have required a decade ago are significantly different from those that they would need today. As a result, The UWI ensures that its courses are constantly being assessed, reviewed and updated to meet the demands of the workforce.
Having a coherent quality assurance plan allows people outside The UWI to know the value of the degree being offered. Consequently, students can now be reassured that they are graduating with a degree that has value internationally in this globalised age. In essence, whilst having a tertiary education is crucial, the quality of that degree is equally essential. The UWI Quality Policy ensures that the degrees offered are worthwhile and world class.
