Introduction

Business writing and communication is a discipline that aims to equip students with the written and oral skills that they need to navigate the complex business communication environment of the twenty first century.  In addition to communicating at the local level, Caribbean business persons may need to interact with others at the regional/ or international levels. 

This CPE Certificate in Business Writing and Communication is a 60 contact hour programme designed to equip individuals with both basic and advanced skills in writing and communication that are needed to function effectively in the professional business workplace.  

Who is this programme for?

This certificate programme targets individuals who are working in the business world and who want to pursue a course of study to hone their written and oral business communication skills with the aim of improving themselves professionally and enhancing their job prospects.  These individuals should have at least basic competence in written communication.  

Programme Structure

The programme consists of two courses. These may be taken together for the completion of the Certificate or participants may be allowed to complete any course for the award of the Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

  • Business Writing and Communication II

Entry Requirements

Participants should have at least 3 CXC passes with a grade 1or 2 at the General proficiency level including English Language.   More mature students who may not have CXC passes or any other formal qualifications should possess substantial experience working in business environments and at least basic competence in written communication.  Kindly contact an Open Campus Site location nearest to you for information on the application process.  

Assessment Structure

A model of continuous in-course assessment will be applied to all courses within this programme. Students will be assessed at different intervals over the duration of each course which may include written examinations. Assignments may also include but are not limited to: case-based activities, practical assignments, presentations and other projects.

Business Writing and Communication II

Students will be exposed to the rhetorical strategies used in various forms of written and oral business communication and enhance their ability to analyse and respond to the needs of different audiences including international audiences.  Students will also use the concepts of audience and purpose to design effective business documents, create and deliver effective multimedia presentations that incorporate visuals, and compose formal reports that incorporate primary and secondary research.

Students will be taught how to write documents commonly used in business writing such as letters, memos, electronic messages, proposals and informal reports.  Students will also be expected to make an oral presentation making use of both verbal and non-verbal forms of communication appropriate to the business environment.
