The Community Policing programme consists of two courses:
- Community-Based Policing I
- Community-Based Policing II
Community-Based Policing I is a basic course that embraces contemporary approaches to policing by introducing new philosophies, methodologies, and practices in solving and preventing crime, primarily focusing on police/community relations. The course will look at policing both in its historical and current contexts. It will examine the usefulness and effectiveness of current strategies; the influence of technological advances such as social media, the adverse impact of crime, disorder and the fear of crime, which are all, linked to the resistance or lack of cooperation by the community to law enforcement crime-fighting initiatives. As a result, the course aims to assist participants in improving policing strategies through the strengthening of community partnerships to proactively address public safety issues.
Community-Based Policing II
This course is designed to improve the professional competencies of the police officer who has been or is actively engaged in community-oriented policing. The course places focus on change approaches, e-policing, proactive collaboration with community and other external parties and problem solving, with a view towards sustainable crime control to improve the quality of life of community members. Participants will be required to do a case study in their own country as part of the course.
Entry Qualification
It is being assumed that police officers would have obtained the required qualifications for entry into the police force and have gained some experience in working within communities. Hence, the participants requiring training will be identified solely by the police force and not by The University of the West Indies Open Campus.
The guide for selecting participants is as follows:
Course 1:
- Police officers with no knowledge or experience in the field
- Police officers whose job function includes direct or indirect interface with the community
- Police officers with unfavourable track record in community relations
Course 2:
- Police officers whose job functions include extensive direct contact with the community, and who have field experience.
- Police officers with formal training in social work or other related disciplines and have extensive field experience but with no formal training in community policing
When the courses will be offered?
- Community-Based Policing I will be offered starting in January 2019
- Community-Based Policing II To Be Announced
How will the courses be offered?
All participants are required to have access to a computer. If there is any participant who does not have access to a computer, he/she will be required to go into The UWI Open Campus Site located in his/her country to access the course. For those countries without an Open Campus Sites, other arrangements will be made and applicants will be duly notified.
Fees
The UWI Open Campus is committed to building the educational capacity of the Region. Therefore, fees will be discounted but the extent of the discount will be dependent upon the number of participants in the Programme. The larger the numbers, the more discount The UWI Open Campus will be able to give. Please see the fee structure below:
Fee Structure
- The cost per course is $360.00 USD. However, if there are more than 10 persons being enrolled from any country, a 15% discount will apply, hence the cost per course will be $306.00 USD;
- For those countries with twenty-five (25) or more persons participating, a 20% discount will apply, hence the cost will be $288.00 USD per course;
- For those Police Forces which have established a Memorandum of Understanding with The University of the West Indies, Open Campus, a 20% discount will apply, hence the cost will be $288.00 USD
What will participants receive on successful completion of the courses?
All participants will receive a certificate upon successful completion of each course.
