System Requirements and Skills for Working Online

Each student is responsible for providing a suitable computer and reliable internet access in order to complete his/her courses.

Does your computer meet the minimum configuration requirements?

As an Global Campus online student, you are responsible for providing your tools to access your courses online. However, there are limited computer facilities available to you at your local Site office. Please speak with officials at the Site for more information.

 

Browser Check

Does your browser meet the minimum requirements for using the UWI Global Campus online systems? Perform this brief browser check to determine if it does.

 

Hardware

To work efficiently in your online programme you will need the right tools:

Minimum Hardware Requirements:

  • Desktop or Laptop with 1GHz CPU  or higher
  • 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)*
  • 64 MB Video RAM
  • 8 GB or higher of available hard drive space at the beginning of each term
  • Internet connectivity (Broadband required for an optimal experience 1Mb is recommended)
  • Printer
  • Headset with Microphone

*NOTE: For creating videos and other course components, you may want to  have 8 GB of RAM.

 

Operating System and Software

Having the proper software to accomplish your objectives is important:

  • Windows XP/Vista/7/8, or MAC OSX [Latest version strongly recommended]
  • Microsoft Office 2003 required, Office [Latest version strongly recommended]
  • Mozilla Firefox , or Google Chrome , or Safari
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Protection - updated regularly with scans performed regularly
  • Email is provided by Global Campus

*NOTE: Some tools require Windows 10 or Mac OS 10

 

Internet Plug-ins

Make sure your computer is configured with the latest version of these plug-ins: 

  • QuickTime Player  (for MAC)
  • Adobe Flash Player
  • Windows Media Player
  • Adobe Reader
  • Java

 

Basic Online Skills

These tutorials provide a brief review of basic skills needed when working on a computer and/or online.

 

Recommended Tools to Support your Online Study

The following tools are recommended to enhance your experience in your online course:

  • Internet access and a computer or mobile device -This will allow you to access all course materials
  • Microphone and speakers or headset/ headphones- These allow you to:
    • Listen to audio content
    • Participate in live sessions
    • Record responses to course assignments
  • Word processing software -  eg. Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.); Google Suite (Docs, Sheet, Slides, etc.)
  • Audio/ video recorder -eg. smartphone
